Iranian-Canadian ‘Funfair’ announced as Oscar chance

Internationally-celebrated Iranian-Canadian short flick ‘Funfair’ has been announced as an Oscar Gold chance this year.

Film Threat, a US online publication, predicted that four Canadian short films have high chance of winning an Oscar in 2021.

Kaveh Mazaheri’s 15-minute flick is on the list which also includes ‘Pick’ by Alicia H. Harris, ‘Cake Day’ by Philip Thomas, and ‘Cayenne’ by Simon Gionet.

‘Funfair’ narrates the story of a young married couple and their 5-year-old kid, Artin. Majid, the father of the family, is a financially struggling man. He comes up with a ploy in order to improve the family’s situation.

Sara, his wife, must jump in front of a car to claim the insurance money which can save them from the miseries they undergo.

Sonia Sanjari, Soroush Saeedi, and Artin Rabiee are the cast members of the flick.

To get qualified for the Oscars, a film must be screened and honored at specific film events around the world.

Mazaheri’s film claimed the pass to the ceremony by winning the best International short film award at the Foyle Film Festival in Ireland and being screened at the Palm Springs International ShortFest in the US.

Both the fests are among the qualifying events of the Academy Awards.

The 2021 edition of the Oscars, which has mostly been held in February, is postponed to April 25 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
